Welcome to Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and the farthest major city from any ocean in the world. Known as a traveler's paradise, it boasts stunning natural scenery, rich cultural heritage, and unique local traditions. Upon arrival, you'll be transferred to your hotel for check-in. The rest of the day is free for you to explore at your leisure.
We will drive 1.5 hours to entrance of the Heavenly Lake at about 08:30, following is the 40-minute shuttle bus twisting through the picturesque Tianshan mountains to the edge of the Lake. You can either Trek around the lake, enjoy the boating cruise, or even take the cable car to explore the Maya Mountain for the incredible view of Bogoda Peak.
Lunch will be served in a traditional Kazakh yurt. Afterward, we'll return to Urumqi and visit the Xinjiang Regional Museum, home to numerous Silk Road archaeological treasures and exhibits on Xinjiang's ethnic minority cultures. Here, you'll learn about the region's history and unique traditions. If time permits, we'll also visit the Grand International Bazaar and enjoy dinner there.
After breakfast, we'll begin our exciting day with a scenic drive to Tuyoq Village, an ancient oasis settlement nestled in the Taklamakan Desert. Located 70 km east of Turpan, this lush valley cuts into the Flaming Mountains and is renowned for its sweet seedless grapes and nearby ancient Buddhist meditation caves, some of which still contain well-preserved frescoes.
Next, we'll visit the Bezekilik Thousand Buddha Caves, a stunning complex of Buddhist cave grottos dating from the 5th to 14th centuries. Situated between Turpan and Shanshan (Loulan) at the northeastern edge of the Taklamakan Desert, these caves lie near the ancient ruins of Gaochang in the Mutou Valley.
Finally, our comfortable bus will take you to the Astana Tombs, an ancient burial site where you can see remarkably well-preserved artifacts, including mummies from different historical periods.
Today, you'll have a full day to explore this fertile oasis. Begin with a visit to the Karez Well irrigation system, an ancient engineering marvel responsible for producing China's finest melons and grapes. Next, explore the Sugong Minaret, a historic symbol of cultural exchange between diverse ethnic and religious groups.
Later, discover the Jiaohe Ruins——often compared to Pompeii but 300 years older——where you can glimpse the ancient way of life of the Uyghur ancestors.
In the evening, return to Urumqi for a restful night. Along the way, we'll pass by the Salt Lake and Asia's largest wind power station, its turbines sprawling dramatically at the foot of the Tianshan Mountains.
Today, you'll bid farewell to Urumqi. We'll arrange your transfer according to your flight or train schedule. Wishing you a pleasant journey home!
