The temperature in Urumqi fluctuates greatly between day and night. The weather of Urumqi is extremely dry due to its geographical location and continental climate. Spring and autumn are short while winter and summer are long. Remote as it is, the local inhabitants fondly call it 'Urumqi' which translates to mean graceful pasture. Urumqi is a melting pot of many different cultures and people. The area has been inhabited for centuries. Evidence of this can be found in the mummies that were found here. Just like the Egyptians the Urumqi people mummified their dead. The mummies can still be admired in the local museum. Urumqi is the only city in China that has a population of several millions and is situated at such a large distance from a sea or ocean. Spring is refreshing while a little cold. It snows occasionally. Summer is beautiful when flowers are in full bloom and grasslands turn to green. It can be hot but the beauty is everlasting. Autumn is the best season to visit Urumqi. As the weather cools, the city is shrouded by colors and scent of ripe fruits. Snow is common in winter and it's very cold. It's the low season, less crowded and cheaper to travel.
