Welcome to Lhasa, the spiritual and cultural heart of Tibet! Perched at 3,650 meters above sea level, this sun-kissed city is a mesmerizing blend of ancient traditions and breathtaking landscapes. Upon arrival, your guide will greet you at the airport or train station and escort you to your hotel. Take the rest of the day to relax and acclimate to the high altitude. Let the serene atmosphere of Lhasa prepare you for the unforgettable tour ahead.
Today, you'll explore two of Tibet's most iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Begin at the majestic Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lama. Towering 12,139 feet above sea level, this architectural marvel boasts over 1,000 rooms adorned with intricate murals, sacred stupas, and priceless artifacts. Feel the weight of history as you wander through its grand halls.
Next, visit the Jokhang Temple, the spiritual epicenter of Tibetan Buddhism. Built over 1,300 years ago, this sacred site pulses with the devotion of pilgrims who come to pay homage. Nearby, lose yourself in the vibrant energy of Barkhor Street, where prayer wheels spin and vendors offer traditional Tibetan crafts. It's the perfect place to soak in local culture and pick up unique souvenirs.
Start your day at Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastic university in Tibet. Marvel at its labyrinthine halls and learn about its rich history as the former residence of the Dalai Lama. In the afternoon, head to Sera Monastery, where the famous monk debates take place. Watch as monks engage in lively philosophical discussions—a truly unique spectacle!
Bid farewell to Lhasa as you tour Gyantse. On the way, stop at the Gampala Pass (4,790m) for a breathtaking view of Yamdrok Lake, a turquoise gem cradled by snow-capped peaks. Tibetans revere this lake as a "scattered earring of the goddess", and its ever-changing hues will leave you spellbound.
In Gyantse, visit the Pelkor Monastery and the stunning Gyantse Kumbum, a masterpiece of Tibetan architecture. This unique pagoda-temple hybrid is adorned with exquisite murals and sculptures, offering a glimpse into Tibet's artistic heritage.
Travel to Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city, and explore Tashilunpo Monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lama. Later, drive toward Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world. Along the way, cross the Pang La Pass (5,050m), where—on a clear day—you'll witness the awe-inspiring sight of Mount Everest and four other towering peaks. Spend the night near Everest Base Camp, surrounded by the Himalayas' grandeur.
Wake early to catch the sunrise over Mount Everest, its golden glow illuminating the world's highest peak. Then, set off for Saga, passing Mt. Shishapangma and the shimmering Peiku Tso Lake. The dramatic landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau will accompany you every step of the way.
Today, you'll encounter the sacred Lake Manasarovar, a jewel of the Himalayas. Hindus and Buddhists alike revere this lake as a source of spiritual purification. Its crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding peaks, creating a scene of unparalleled serenity. Continue to Darchen, the gateway to Mount Kailash, where your pilgrimage trek begins.
Your Mount Kailash pilgrimage begins today! After an early breakfast, take an eco-bus to Sarshung Valley where your support team (yaks and porters) awaits. The 13km trek winds through Lachu Valley, following crystal-clear glacial streams with constant views of Kailash's formidable west and north faces. Tibetan pilgrims chanting prayers and spinning prayer wheels will share the path, their devotion palpable in the mountain air. Reach Drirapuk Monastery (5,210m) by afternoon——its strategic location offers one of Kailash's most iconic views. As sunset paints the north face golden, you'll understand why this is considered Buddhism's most sacred mountain.
Today brings the pilgrimage's most demanding yet spiritually rewarding section. A steady climb leads to Dromala Pass, the circuit's highest point at 5,630m - higher than Mont Blanc! Catch your breath while hanging prayer flags and marveling at the panoramic views. The descent reveals stunning surprises: the jewel-like Kadoe Lake, believed to cleanse sins, and the Zutulpuk Monastery cave where Milarepa meditated. Witness pilgrims prostrating the entire route - their determination will humble you. Overnight at simple monastery guesthouses lets you experience authentic pilgrimage life.
The final 7km trek feels like a victory lap. Walk past mani stone piles carrying centuries of prayers, their carved mantras whispering in the wind. At Zongto, board vehicles back to Darchen where hot showers and comfortable beds await. Take time to reflect——you've just completed a 52km tour around the axis of the Buddhist universe, following in the footsteps of saints and pilgrims for millennia. The sense of accomplishment (and perhaps some sore muscles) will stay with you forever.
Today, you'll embark on a picturesque drive from Darchen to Saga via Lake Manasorova, retracing part of your earlier route. Marvel once more at the vast, open landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau, where snow-capped peaks meet rolling grasslands. Keep your camera ready for spontaneous glimpses of nomadic herders and their flocks, a timeless scene of life in this high-altitude wonderland.
After breakfast, set off for the historic town of Sakya, renowned for its striking Sakya Monastery. Unlike traditional Tibetan red-and-white temples, this monastery stands out with its unique grey walls, earning it the nickname "Grey Jewel". Stroll through its halls adorned with ancient murals and scriptures, and feel the weight of centuries of Buddhist scholarship. The rest of the day is yours to explore the town's quiet charm or simply relax and reflect on your tour so far.
Bid farewell to Sakya as you drive to Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city. Along the way, soak in the ever-changing vistas of the plateau, where rugged mountains give way to fertile valleys dotted with barley fields. Upon arrival, enjoy some leisure time to wander through Shigatse's bustling markets or visit local cafes for a taste of Tibetan butter tea.
Your final day of tour takes you back to Lhasa via the stunning Yalong Valley. Stop at a viewpoint to admire the Brahmaputra River, its turquoise waters carving through the valley like a ribbon of life. If time permits, visit a traditional water mill where locals grind barley for incense——a perfect snapshot of Tibetan daily life. As Lhasa reappears on the horizon, take a moment to reflect on the incredible landscapes and spiritual encounters of your tour.
Your tour concludes as we transfer you to the airport or train station. Carry the memories of Tibet's sacred mountains, shimmering lakes, and profound spirituality with you——until we meet again on your next adventure!
