Day 1Urumqi Arrival

Welcome to Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and the farthest major city from any ocean in the world. Known as a traveler's paradise, it boasts stunning natural scenery, rich cultural heritage, and unique local traditions. Upon arrival, you'll be transferred to your hotel for check-in. The rest of the day is free for you to explore at your leisure.

Day 2Heavenly Lake - Turpan Jiaohe Ruins

We will drive 1.5 hours to entrance of the Heavenly Lake at about 08:30, following is the 40-minute shuttle bus twisting through the picturesque Tianshan mountains to the edge of the Lake. You can either Trek around the lake, enjoy the boating cruise, or even take the cable car to explore the Maya Mountain for the incredible view of Bogoda Peak.

Next, we will drive to Turpan, where the tour will conclude with a two-hour exploration of the Jiaohe Ruins—an ancient site resembling Pompeii but 300 years older—where you can experience the way of life of the Uighur ancestors.

It takes 4 hrs ( 259 km ) from Heavenly Lake to Turpan.

Day 3Turpan City Tour then Drive to Shanahan

After breakfast, a great day begins. First, we drive to the Flaming Mountains, known for their scorching heat, as well as the nearby ancient Buddhist meditation caves adorned with frescoes.

Next, we visit the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, a complex of Buddhist cave grottos dating from the 5th to the 14th century. Located between Turpan and Shanshan (Loulan), northeast of the Taklamakan Desert, these caves lie near the ancient ruins of Gaochang in the Mutou Valley.

Afterward, our scenic bus ride will take you to the Astana Tombs, an ancient burial site where you can see well-preserved artifacts, including mummies. We will also visit the Ruins of the Ancient City of Gaochang, once a political, economic, and cultural hub of Xinjiang. The remaining structures consist of three sections built in different eras.

Finally, we drive to Shanshan to explore the Kumtag Desert, where temperatures swing from freezing at night to scorching during the day.

Day 4Turpan City Tour then Train to Urumqi

After breakfast, we begin our day by visiting the remarkable Karez Well irrigation system, an ancient underground water network responsible for cultivating some of China's finest melons and grapes. Our next stop is the historic Sugong Minaret, which stands as a testament to the cultural exchange between different ethnic and religious groups throughout history.

We then return to Urumqi to explore the Xinjiang Regional Museum, home to an impressive collection of archaeological treasures from the Silk Road era and fascinating exhibits showcasing Xinjiang's diverse minority cultures. Here you'll gain deep insights into the region's rich history and unique ethnic traditions. If time permits, we'll conclude our day at the vibrant Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar, where you can enjoy dinner while immersing yourself in the lively local atmosphere.

Day 5End of Tour

Today, you'll bid farewell to Urumqi. We'll arrange your transfer according to your flight or train schedule. Wishing you a pleasant journey home!

Climate and Altitude

Generally speaking Mid March—End Oct are the best time to visit Silk Road. And we strongly suggest you come in May, June, October to avoid the heat and crowd. No need to worry about high altitude along the Silk Road. We will prepare Oxygen bags if the package includes Xiahe, Qinghai Lake and Taxkorgan County.
