"Return to the Three Gorges" is a large-scale outdoor cultural performance directed by renowned filmmaker Zhang Yimou (known for the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony). Premiered in 2019 in Fengjie County, Chongqing, this 60-minute spectacle is China’s first and only live show performed entirely on the Yangtze River, blending classic Chinese poetry, traditional music, and cutting-edge technology against the backdrop of the majestic Qutang Gorge and White Emperor City.
The show revives 10 famous ancient poems by legendary poets like Li Bai, Du Fu, Su Shi, and Liu Yuxi, transforming them into immersive visual and musical experiences.
Unlike traditional theater shows, this floating stage is set directly on the river, with real mountains and water as its backdrop.
The world’s first water-buoyancy performance system allows actors to dance and move seamlessly across the water, creating dreamlike visuals.
63 dynamic screens made of ultra-thin steel wires project holographic images, blending poetry with Chinese ink-painting aesthetics.
The show features 10 iconic poems, including:
Li Bai’s "Departing from Baidi City at Dawn" – A breathtaking depiction of sailing through the Three Gorges.
Du Fu’s "Ascending the Heights" – A melancholic yet powerful reflection on life, enhanced by dramatic lighting and choreography.
Liu Yuxi’s "Bamboo Branch Song" – A romantic folk-style performance with live singing and dancing.
Su Shi’s "Prelude to Water Melody" – A grand finale with celestial projections and floating lanterns.
3D projection mapping transforms the river into a living canvas.
Holographic effects make it seem as if ancient poets appear on the water.
Interactive lighting synchronizes with music, creating an emotional journey.
