Day 1Xining Arrival

Once arriving in Xijing, you will be taken to Ta'er Monastery (Kumbum Monastery) by our nice guide, one of the six major temples of Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism in China. With a history of more than 400 years,Ta’er Monastery is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Xining for magnificent architecture, rich treasures, colorful murals and embroidery.

Day 2Xining-Chaka Salt Lake-Qinghai Lake (450kms, 6-7hrs driving)

Enjoy the delicious breakfast, then head to explore Chaka Salt Lake. As the largest saline in Qinghai Province, Chaka in Mongolian means “the sea of salt” . It is actually a brine lake with solid and liquid salt coexisting, inlaid in snow mountain grassland. You might be surprised to find that Chaka Salt Lake is famed as the Sky of China as the  Uyuni Salt Marsh in Bolivia for its wide water area with silver salt waves decorated by mountains, grass, and sheep around.

Day 3Xining-Zhangye

With the early start drive to Qinhai Lake to see it as vast as sea. The best time of touring the lake is in August, when rape flowers around are in full blossom. Light yellow flowers and blue water fitting in each other, seen most beautifully and peacefully. The lake is also unique for sunlight falling on it with sky in one at the horizon. The other side for tourists to explore is Tibetan culture about the lake. In Tibetan people’ belief, walking around the lake is the worship of holy spirit.

As the lake trip is over, back to Xining and catch the express train to Zhangye.

Day 4Zhangye

The journey today will begin with the Giant Buddha Temple, located in the southeast of the city. There is the longest statue of Sakyamuni Nirvana in the temple with 34.5 meters long, 7.5 meters wide and and 5.2 meters long. He looks like entering the paradise. Beside him here are his followers with great respect looking at the half asleep and half dreamy Buddha. Afterwards, proceed the tour to Mati Temple known for horse foot prints on the walls, which are said to be left by a heaven horse so named after by legendary. It becomes the treasure of temple culture integrating with Buddhist images, Qilian mountain scenery and Yugur customs.

Day 5hangye-Jiayuguan (230kms, 3hrs driving)

Half day is still needed to pay a visit Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park for ribbons of red, orange and yellow through the rock to create a rainbow vista contained only by the contours of the jagged mountain peaks. So many people also call it "Rainbow Mountain". After the visiting, we will travel to next stop Jiayuguan for overnight stay

Day 6Jiayuguan-Dunhuang (350kms,4.5hrs driving)

Around 3hrs driving roughly, we head to Jiayuguan Great Wall after the delighted breakfast. It is located 6 km southwest of Jiayuguan City, built in Ming Dynasty with the 631 history. It is also called “The First Front Pass” known for Indestructible Military Defense System. As hanging around, pay a short visit Jiayuguan Great Wall Museum, which was opened to the public in October 1989 and it is the first one to exhibit the Great Wall culture in a comprehensive and systematic way. Then say farewell to Jiayuguan and transfer to next stop Dunhuang. Upon arrival, enjoy a walking tour at the Shazhou Night Market, the most bustling place of Dunhuang at night, taste the local cuisine and buy some souvenirs for your family and friends.

Day 7Dunhuang

This morning we will visit Mogao Grottoes, this UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the great artistic and religious wonders of the world and it is famous for its exquisite murals and various sculptures inside the caves, which was built in different dynasties, spanning 1,000 years of Buddhist art.we will head to visit the Echoing Sand Mountain&Crescent Lake. When there is wild wind, the sands will be blown up and make loud sound, while the sound sounds like being produced by some ancient musical instrument when blew by breeze, There is also a Crescent Lake that has been in existence for hundreds of years without ever being buried by the sand. Riding the camel as the Silk Road Caravan in the vast desert is highly recommended (approximately 40mins). Please bring your sunglasses and and mask to keep out the dust.

Day 8Dunhuang Departure

Enjoy your leisure time in the morning, we will arrange airport transfer according to your flight schedule, wish you have a pleasant journey home!

If interested, you can do an exploration to Dunhuang Museum before the airport transfer.

Climate and Altitude

Generally speaking Mid March—End Oct are the best time to visit Silk Road. And we strongly suggest you come in May, June, October to avoid the heat and crowd. No need to worry about high altitude along the Silk Road. We will prepare Oxygen bags if the package includes Xiahe, Qinghai Lake and Taxkorgan County.
